AMG 12J2 Tonearm
The AMG 12J2, introduced on the Viella in 2012, contributed to the critical and commercial success of the AMG brand. It’s elegant appearance and precise engineering allowed for the superior tracing of the record groove without increasing mass or moment of inertia found in other 12” tonearms.
The 12J2 was AMG's first tonearm using Werner Roeschlau’s unique bearing design, based on his background in aeronautics. The AMG Patented Dual-pivot bearing Vertical bearing mimics the technique used in the rotor heads of helicopters. It uses two .5mm thick “spring steel wires,” allowing fine azimuth adjustment while eliminating any bearing play or wear. The horizontal axle is a hardened tool steel shaft, precision ground to a backlash-free fit with both a lower needle roller bearing and upper multi-ball bearing assembly. It is extremely precise and maintenance free. The 12J2 uses magnetic anti-skate, multi-stranded internal copper wire, and adjustable VTA.
Bearing:
- Dual-pivot design replaces the standard gimbaled bearing
- Vertical bearing, similar to a technique used in the rotor heads of helicopters
- Uses two .5mm thick “spring steel wires,” allowing fine azimuth adjustment while eliminating bearing play
- Horizontal axle is a hardened tool steel, precision ground to a backlash-free git with a needle roller bearing
- It is extremely precise, maintenance free, and never requires adjustment
